Indy Women Creating Space // Meet Jona Wells

If you haven’t crossed paths with Jona Wells, you are in for such a treat! We met last year when she reached out to interview me on her podcast, Indy Women Who Inspire. Since our conversation, I have listened to nearly all of the episodes of Season 1 + 2 as I drive to and from client projects and I would encourage you to add a few to your podcast queue too.

Jona created a platform to share these stories and does it with the ease and curiosity of a dear friend, even if you have only just met for the first time. What I love the most about her podcast is that it brings the human side to light of the women behind many of Indianapolis’ incredible organizations, businesses and non-profits.

I am delighted to share this inspiring conversation with Jona!

Who are you and what lights you up? Tell us your story, your mission, and what you’re building in Indy.

I’m Jona Wells, a friend, dedicated daughter, sister, mom of three amazing children, and a supportive wife. My journey has been deeply influenced by my mom, a remarkable single parent who inspired me daily by being a community supporter, tackling challenges head-on, and founding her own non-profit.

I graduated from Indiana University with a Business Marketing degree from the Kelley School of Business. After working in the pharmaceutical industry for many years, I took a step back to support my husband in founding his own company.

My podcast was born out of an annual party I throw with a friend celebrating Indiana BadAss women. The inspiration from the incredible women around me and the powerful stories I encountered, particularly after reading "The Women" by Kristin Hannah made me want to make sure women have a platform to celebrate one another. I’ve made it my mission to highlight Indiana women who have pursued their passions. Through my podcast, I aim to share their personal stories and experiences, fostering a sense of community and empowerment. My goal is not only to celebrate these remarkable women but also to inspire others to follow their own paths.

What values anchor the work you do?

The values that anchor the work I do include: compassion, kindness, love, and hope. Compassion for women who have tried something new or who have followed their dreams. Kindness in knowing every woman has a story that encompasses good, bad and difficult times. Love for our sisters and hope that we all can celebrate one another.

Give us a peek into your space! Share what makes a particular space in your home or workplace feel utterly and totally "YOU."

My Inspiring Space: Home Parlor in our 1920's Meridian Kessler Home:

My cozy home parlor is a sanctuary that overlooks our front yard, where neighbors often stroll and explore.

Atmosphere: The space has a moody yet studious vibe, enriched by an abundance of natural light that flows in. It’s the perfect blend of comfort and inspiration, creating a peaceful environment ideal for reflection and creativity.

Elements: I’ve outfitted the parlor with a fun speakeasy theme, featuring vintage decor that adds character and charm. The absence of television and technology enhances the atmosphere, allowing for uninterrupted thinking and focus.

Activities: This space is my go-to for brainstorming ideas and podcast planning. It’s also where my family gathers for game nights, making it a hub of both creativity and connection.

Emotional Connection: Every time I step into the parlor, I feel a sense of calm and clarity. It’s a place where I can think deeply and enjoy quality time with loved ones, reinforcing the importance of balance in my life.

Your go-to tip: What organization, mindset, or workflow trick has been a game-changer?

My Game-Changing Mindset:

Embracing Flexibility: I’ve learned that traditional organization methods don’t always work for me, especially with my ADD. Instead, I embrace a flexible mindset that allows me to adapt my workflow to fit my needs.

Regular Breaks: Taking breaks is essential for me. Stepping away helps clear my mind and allows me to return to tasks with fresh eyes and renewed focus.

Revisiting Topics: If I find myself repeatedly drawn to a particular topic, it signals its importance. I lean into these topics, giving myself permission to explore them deeply, even if it means deviating from my original plan.

Prioritizing Passion: Focusing on what excites me helps maintain my motivation. When I engage with subjects I’m passionate about, I find it easier to concentrate and stay organized.

Visual Reminders: I use visual reminders, like sticky notes and alarms on my phone, to keep key ideas and topics in sight. This helps anchor my thoughts and keeps me focused on what matters. This approach has transformed my organization from a source of frustration to one of flexibility and creativity. By leaning into what resonates with me, I can navigate my days more effectively.
